Influence of oral hygiene on children's school and academic well-being

Oral health has been a crucial factor in the comprehensive development of children, directly influencing their physical and emotional well-being. The high prevalence of dental diseases, such as caries, has affected both the general health and academic performance of students, especially in rural communities. Therefore, this study has analyzed the relationship between oral health and academic performance in children aged 7 to 12 years in communities near Riobamba, considering the impact of dental diseases on school performance. To do so, the study has been developed by analyzing information collected from residents of these communities. Likewise, the factors with the greatest impact on oral health have been identified from the modeling of Saaty's AHP method. The results obtained have shown a positive relationship between the prevalence of caries and academic performance, highlighting that children with dental problems have reported lower performance due to school absences and distraction due to dental pain. These effects have been mainly associated with limited access to dental services, socioeconomic factors and lack of educational programs on oral hygiene. Consequently, it has been concluded that it is essential to promote oral health in the communities studied through preventive and educational programs that integrate key actors, in order to improve both oral health and the academic performance of children.
