From silence to public voice: the testimony of Jacob Bolaños, LGBTI activist
Keywords:
Discrimination, human rights, inclusion, LGBTI identity, public policiesAbstract
The research analyzed the story of Jacob Bolaños, a young LGBTI activist, and examined the discrimination that affected the community. It highlighted the importance of human rights, such as equality and non-discrimination, in combating violence and hate crimes. It found that both physical and verbal violence negatively impacted key areas, particularly education and the workplace, where high levels of rights violations were recorded. The research criticized the traditional educational model and proposed an inclusive approach that would allow educators to foster safe environments where students could express their difficulties. The essential role of the family in the acceptance of LGBTI identity was emphasized, as unconditional support was seen as crucial for personal well-being. The research employed a qualitative methodology based on interviews aimed at delving deeper into the experiences of various activists. Focus groups were incorporated into two sessions, each with six to eight participants from the LGBTI community, intentionally selected to ensure diversity of age, gender, and background. The life journey and activism of Jacob Bolaños, who significantly promoted the fight against discrimination, was documented. The results showed that his activism contributed to a broader understanding of the challenges faced by the community, while also revealing novel aspects of the intersectionality of social problems. Conclusions were drawn that recommended strengthening inclusive policies and comprehensive practices. It was also proposed that the recognition of human rights is essential to advancing social justice and comprehensive equity.
