Cocoa cultivation is crucial in the economy of Ecuador, with the province of Los Ríos being one of the main producing regions. This study aimed to identify productive chain strategies that contribute to improving the profitability of these producers in Los Ríos. A mixed approach was adopted, combining quantitative and qualitative methods, with a sample of 100 producers selected through stratified sampling. The results showed that small producers face significant structural challenges, such as limited access to agricultural inputs, lack of training, and dependence on intermediaries, which results in unfavorable selling prices. Additionally, most producers employ conventional farming methods and lack an effective organization that allows them to form cooperatives to improve their bargaining power in the markets. From the analysis, key strategies were identified to optimize the sector's profitability, including the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, improvement in post-harvest management, and access to direct markets. Furthermore, the need to promote technical training and facilitate access to financing is emphasized as determinant factors to strengthen the competitiveness of Ecuadorian cocoa. The implementation of these strategies is essential to increase the profitability and sustainability of the cocoa sector, promoting the economic and social development of rural communities. Finally, the importance of public policies prioritizing the strengthening of the cocoa productive chain is highlighted, ensuring better opportunities for small producers and their integration into more profitable and sustainable markets.
