Abstract

Drug trafficking is a global phenomenon that negatively impacts citizen security and local economies, especially in vulnerable communities like Babahoyo, Ecuador. The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of drug trafficking on citizen security and the local economy in Babahoyo, Ecuador. A descriptive and cross-sectional design with a quantitative approach was used, employing a structured questionnaire applied to a representative sample of 384 participants, selected with a 95% confidence level and a 5% margin of error. The results showed that 60% of respondents perceived an increase in drug trafficking in recent years, while 40% considered the actions of local authorities insufficient. Additionally, 60% expressed insecurity about sending their children to school, and 60% perceived a high likelihood of receiving threats or extortion. In the economic sphere, 40% of participants identified a significant negative impact on small and medium-sized enterprises due to drug trafficking. The conclusions highlight that drug trafficking directly affects the perception of security, economic stability, and social well-being, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty and distrust in Babahoyo. This study emphasizes the need to implement comprehensive strategies, including security measures, preventive education, and sustainable economic development, to mitigate the effects of drug trafficking and promote the well-being of people.
