Potential of different concentrations of Artemisia absinthium l. Against Sitophilus oryzae l
Keywords:

The research was conducted in the laboratories of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the University of Cienfuegos, Cuba. The intensive use of chemical products for the control of Sitophilus oryzae L., an insect that causes severe damage to stored grains, has favored the emergence of resistant populations, making it necessary to search for effective and environmentally friendly alternatives, such as plant powders. In order to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of Artemisia absinthium L. (Asteraceae) powder on S. oryzae under in vitro conditions, a trial was conducted under a completely randomized design with four treatments: 0 (control), 0,5, 1,0, and 1,5 % of leaf powder from the species relative to the weight of maize seeds (Zea mays L.), with 15 replications per treatment. Adult S. oryzae specimens fed with maize grains were used in 0.12 L flasks. The following variables were evaluated: mortality percentage at 15 days after application, grain weight loss at 55 days, repellency index, and the potential effect of the powder on seed germination. Mortality data were transformed using the arcsine function (2×arcsine(√(percentage/100))) and subjected to analysis of variance using the SPSS statistical package version 21. Mean comparisons were performed using Tukey's test (p < 0,05). A. absinthium powder at 1 % showed an insecticidal effect of 57,57 %, considered promising for the variables of mortality, repellency, and weight loss, without affecting maize seed germination.
